Welcome to Adventures in Excellence!

I have eight years of tutoring and teaching experience and have worked with students of a variety of cultural backgrounds and ages—elementary students to university students. I have found it rewarding to unlock a love of writing and literature in students who have struggled with English their whole lives, and enjoy challenging strong writers to become excellent writers. I have personally used IEW’s curriculum from elementary school through high school, and it gave me the foundation and tools to excel at the University of Saint Thomas as well as obtain writing jobs since then.

I am excited to share that love of words and passion for excellence with my students, and give them skills which will help them think more complex, elevated thoughts, create quality work in the years to come, and express themselves for the rest of their lives.

About Mary Yapel

Tutor

Hi, my name is Mary Yapel =)

I have been teaching and tutoring since 2014, when I graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a double major in Education and English.  Throughout these past ten years, I have taught at a Catholic homeschool group, online public school, and parochial Catholic school. My main experience has been teaching 6-8 grade writing and literature with some high school courses as well.

As an Education major, I know that all students have the capacity and ability to learn. It is my responsibility to help learners come to the material in my class from many different angles in order for them to fully grasp the material and learn in a way that is appealing to them. Through a strong community of charity and joy, I love watching students flourish and advance in their knowledge and self development.

As an English major, I believe that books, stories, and poetry are the backbone of society. They help us understand the human condition, give us sympathy for our fellow man, and instill dreams for the future. We understand our lives as a story and the role we play in society. Literature is necessary for the human heart and modern students deserve to be given this key part of our culture. I am also committed to forming students who have concrete writing skills and who can think deeply about issues today. I love teaching literature and writing and helping students understand and express their place in God's eternal plan.

Previous Speaking Topics:

Sanctity in a Modern World

As a teacher, I have had to help an increasing number of people in my community who struggle to understand their place and how Catholics should respond to the growing conversation on things such as sexualty, race, and gender. It is important to discuss these topics with understanding, love, and boldness, and helpful for those who are looking to deepen their faith while living in the world. My theological background and studies of Pope John Paul the II has helped inform my understanding of the beauty of the human person, bringing dignity and love to the conversation. I will be giving a talk like this in June: https://www.mnconference.org/speakers.html
